water+shed 1.the dividing line between two adjacent river systems, such as a ridge. 2. an important period or factor that serves as a dividing line.
water+shed is a collection of works selected from a twenty year archive of sustained responses to issues of water and its competing uses. Fettling’s sociological and political views explore the nexus between culture and nature and the psychology of the oasis.

On Saturday September 23rd 1944 Sunraysia Daily announced a priceless collection of modern art had been offered to Sunraysia by donors Mr R.D Elliott and Mrs Hilda Elliott. A condition of the gift was that Mildura should properly care for and display to best advantage. The condition was not easily met due the size of the collection. When Hattie Chaffey died in 1950 Rio Vista became vacant. The council, concerned that it might lose the Elliott collection, purchased Rio Vista and converted it into a Gallery. The new Gallery, complete with the Elliott’s gift including the Brangwyn murals, was opened in 1956. Rio Vista designed as a family home, was less than ideal as a Gallery, especially given the enormous scale of the Brangwyn mural. In 1966 a new Gallery was completed adjacent to Rio Vista and at that time the old house became a museum.
The Elliott Collection, supplemented by works bequeathed by Hilda Elliott in 1970 is too large to be shown in its entirety and is therefore confined to the lower Gallery.

Simryn Gill: Inland
Thursday, 28 January 2010
to Wednesday, 10 March 2010
A NETS Victoria touring exhibition developed by the Centre for Contemporary Photography in association with Melbourne International Arts Festival. Curated by Naomi Cass.
Explore the notion of the interior in this survey of one of Australia’s leading photographic artists. Simryn Gill is not a documentary photographer. Photographing the world is critical to Gill’s practice. This conundrum forms the basis of Inland, a survey of Gill’s photography. Taking a long view through Gill’s practice, the exhibition commences with works from Gill’s first photographic series Forest (1996-98), which addresses the entanglement of nature and culture and the predicament of place and history. The survey includes more recent works including Rampant (1999), Power station (2004) and Distance (2008). Her most recent work, commissioned for Simryn Gill: Inland, is at the heart of the exhibition.
Inland is designed to be 'interacted' with, the work comprises a number of hand-processed Cibachrome prints, capturing the interior of homes Gill visited on her journey from nothern New South Wales across to Western Australia. These aren't your typical tourist magazine photos of Australia, but rather an intimate insight into the heart of the real Australia.
Public program opportunity: Three sessions have been allocated for those interested in 'interacting' with the work Inland in very small group numbers (gloves supplied): 10 am - 11 am, Wednesday 10 February 2010 10 am - 11 am, Wednesday 17 February 2010 10 am - 11 am, Wednesday 24 February 2010
